1. How do I know what my current Faswin data directory is?
Run Faswin.
From the 'File' menu, select 'File Management'.
Click on the 'Company' file and press the 'Info' button.
Make a note of the disk name (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data\Reg1\Company.dat).
Click the 'Done' button to close the File Manager window.
The directory in which the COMPANY.DAT file is found, is your current data directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data\Reg1). 
2. How do I know if I have the latest version of Faswin?
Run Faswin.
From the 'Help' menu, select 'About'.
Make a note of the version number and close the 'About' screen.
Select the Downloads page - you will see the latest version number appears first. 
3. After running the update program, I can no longer see my Companies/Asset Registers when I run Faswin
Run Faswin.
From the 'File' menu, select 'File Management'.
Click on the 'Company' file and press the 'Info' button.
Make a note of the disk name (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data\Reg1\Company.dat).
Click the 'Done' button to close the File Manager window.
The directory in which the COMPANY.DAT file is found, is your current data directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data\Reg1).
Click the 'Start' button, 'Find', 'Files or Folders...'.
In the 'Named' field, type 'Rvdm.dat', and make sure that the 'Look in' field contains 'My Computer' and that 'Include subfolders' is ticked.
Click the 'Find Now' button.
The directories listed are possible data directories.
Run the update again and point to a directory from the list found (other than the directory mentioned in point 6 above). 
4. Faswin will not allow me to add another Cost Centre
Run Faswin.
From the 'Help' menu, select 'About'.
Make a note of the version number, level and serial number and close the About screen.
Please note that the Standard Edition only allows you to have 1000 Cost Centres - you will need to upgrade to the Enterprise edition should you have more.
To upgrade to the Enterprise edition, you will need to deposit US$129 (excl) into the following: Account: CapeSoft Software (Pty) LtdBank: NedbankBranch: Business Western CapeBranch Code: 123209Account No: 1232049824.
Fax a copy of your Deposit Slip to +27 21 715-2535.
On receipt of your faxed Deposit Slip, we will issue you with an Activation Code via e-mail or fax.
Run Faswin.
From the 'Security' Menu, select 'Product Registration'. When you see the Registration Wizard, press the 'Register' button.
Type the Activation Code in the space provided (exactly as on the form) and press the 'Tab' key when you have finished.
Check that the number in brackets after the Activation Code is the same as that on the Activation Code form that was sent to you.
If the numbers are not the same, check that the code you have typed is exactly the same as the one on the form, ensuring that you have used the correct 'dash' and that there are no spaces before, after or within the Activation Code.
When the numbers in brackets match, press the 'Register Program' button.
Close Faswin and Restart.
From the 'Help' Menu, select 'About'.
Check that Faswin is now registered at Enterprise level. 
5. Faswin will not allow me to add another Department
Run Faswin.
From the 'Help' Menu, select 'About'.
Make a note of the version number, level and serial number and close the About screen.
Please note that the Standard Edition only allows you to have 50 Departments - you will need to upgrade to the Enterprise edition should you have more.
To upgrade to the Enterprise edition, you will need to deposit US$129 (excl) into the following: Account: CapeSoft Software (Pty) LtdBank: NedbankBranch: Business Western CapeBranch Code: 123209Account No: 1232049824.
Fax a copy of your Deposit Slip to +27 21 715-2535.

6. Faswin will not allow me to add an Asset
Run Faswin.
From the 'Help' Menu, select 'About'.
Make a note of the version number, level and serial number and close the About screen.
Please note that the Standard Edition only allows you to have 1000 Assets - you will need to upgrade to the Enterprise edition should you have more.

7. How do I get my old Fasset data converted for Faswin and what will it cost me?
If you have Asset Manager, Fasset 1.2, Fasset 1.3x or 1.5x, follow the instructions below to have your data converted.
Compress all the files in your Fasset directory and e-mail the compressed file to support@faswin.co.za.
You will need to pay for the conversions in advance. Costs are as follows:
Normal Conversion (No Sales/Disposals) = R300-00 per Asset Register
Between 15 and 40 Sales/Disposals = Normal conversion plus R50-00
More than 40 Sales/Disposals = Normal conversion plus R100-00.
On receipt of your faxed Deposit Slip, we will go ahead with the file conversion. Please note that conversions may take up to three (3) weeks to complete. 
8. After running the update program, I get a message "Your product has expired, contact your application supplier" when I run Faswin
Run Faswin.
From the 'File' menu select 'File Management'.
Click on the 'Company' file and press the 'Info' button.

9. I ran the Faswin update program, but now when I run Faswin, I get a message "Unable to open Security Access file, contact your application supplier"
Click the 'Start' button, 'Find', 'Files or Folders...'.
In the 'Named' field, type 'Rvdm.dat', and make sure that the 'Look in' field contains 'My Computer' and that 'Include subfolders' is ticked.
Click the 'Find Now' button.
The directories listed are possible data directories.
Run the update again and point to the first directory from the list found.
Run Faswin. If you get the same message, go to step 5 and point to the next directory in the list. 
10. The company sold an asset in Period 4, but now it is Period 5. How do I capture the sale for period 4 now that I am in period 5?
Open the Company/Asset Register for which you want to process the sale.
At the Security window, change the default date to the date for which you want to process the sale.
Process the sale in the usual manner and close the Company/Asset Register when you have completed the sale. 
11. I forgot my password and Faswin will not allow me in
Type 'Demo' at the Login prompt.
Press the 'Tab' key and type 'Demo' at the Password prompt.
Click the 'OK' button or press the 'Enter' key.
If this still does not allow you into Faswin, then e-mail the 'DsSw2.tps' file in your Faswin data directory to info@faswin.com.
12. How can I stop Faswin from asking for a Login and password?
Run Faswin.
From the 'Help' Menu, select 'About'.
If the version number is earlier than 1.17, follow steps 4 to 6 to download the latest version. If you have version 1.17 or later, then continue from step 7.
Select the Downloads page.
Download the latest version of Faswin.
In Faswin, select 'Security', 'Browse Operators'.
Highlight the first Operator and click the 'Delete' button.
Repeat step 8 until there are no more operators.
Click the 'Close' button.
Select 'File', 'Exit'.
Restart Faswin. You will now no longer be required to enter a Login and password. 
13. I have an activation code, but I keep getting an 'Activation unsuccessful' message
Make sure that the date and time of your PC is correct.
Check that the Activation Code has not expired.
Re-type the Activation Code in the space provided (exactly as on the form) and press the 'Tab' key when you have finished.
Check that the number in brackets after the Activation Code is the same as that on the Activation Code form that was sent to you.
If the numbers are not the same, check that the code you have typed is exactly the same as the one on the form, ensuring that you have used the correct 'dash' and that there are no spaces before, after or within the Activation Code.
When the numbers in brackets match, press the 'Register Program' button. 
14. I have an activation code, but I keep getting an 'Activation Code 1 incorrect' message

15. Can I run a short Year-End in Faswin?
There is a short Year-End utility available on the latest version of Faswin. If you do not have the latest version, download it free of charge from the web site. 
16. My year-to-date Depreciation figure for assets has zero cost
Run Faswin.
From the 'Tools' menu, select 'Recalculate Depreciation'. 
17. How do I run a backup?
Close Faswin, click the Start button, select 'Programs', select 'Faswin', select 'Backup and Restore'.
If prompted 'Do you want to create CFG.TPS?', click the 'Yes' button.
From the 'File' menu, select 'Backup Data'.
Once you have selected the drive and folder containing your backup file, press the 'Start' button.
If you have multiple companies, you have the option to back up registers separately. To do this, click on the company you want to back up and press the 'select' button. By clicking the 'All' button, all companies will be backed up together.
You will then be notified of the number of disks you will need for the backup. Press the 'Continue' button to start the backup or the 'Cancel' button to abort the backup.
On completion of the backup, you will be returned to the Backup and Restore desktop (plain grey).
From the 'File' menu, select 'Exit' to close the Backup and Restore program. 
18. How can payments be made (Local Account)?
Payment can be made via Bank Transfer or Direct Deposit.
Fax a copy of the Deposit Slip or Proof of Transfer to 021 715 2535.
Banking details are as follows: Account: CapeSoft Software (Pty) LtdBank: NedbankBranch: Business Western CapeBranch Code: 123209Account No: 1232049824. 
19. How can payments be made (International Account)?
Payment can be made via Bank Transfer or Direct Deposit.
Fax a copy of the Deposit Slip or Proof of Transfer to +27 21 715 2535.

20. How do I restore my data?
Close Faswin, click the Start button, select 'Programs', select 'Faswin', select 'Backup and Restore'.
If prompted 'Do you want to create CFG.TPS?', click the 'Yes' button.
From the 'File' menu, select 'Restore Data'.
Once you have selected the drive and folder containing your backup file, press the 'Start' button.
If you get a message 'Cannot create Directory' on your screen, make a note of the drive and the directory that needs to be created.
From the 'File' menu, select 'Exit' to close the Backup and Restore program.
Create the directory in the drive noted in point 5 above.
Go back to step 1 and try restoring again.
On completion of the backup, you will be returned to the Backup and Restore desktop (plain grey).
From the 'File' menu, select 'Exit' to close the Backup and Restore program.
21. How do I transfer an asset from one group to another?
From the 'Edit' menu, select 'Assets'.
Select the asset that you want to change.
Click the 'Change' button.
Click the down arrow next to the group field name.
Select the new group from the drop down list.
Press the 'Ok' button. 
22. How can I change the group defaults for an entire group, including assets already captured?
From the 'Tools' menu, select 'Re-apply Group Defaults'.
Follow the prompts given by the wizard. 
23. How can I enter Prior Year Depreciation for an asset?
From the 'Edit' menu, select 'Assets'.
Select the asset that you want to change.
Click the 'Change' button.
Select the 'Book values' or 'Tax Values' tab.
Click the 'Depreciation Information' button.
Enter the prior year depreciation into the 'Prior Year Depreciation' field.
Press the 'Ok' button to update the depreciation information.
Press the 'Ok' button to update the asset information. 
24. How do I change the current Depreciation and Tax rates for an asset?
From the 'Edit' menu, select 'Assets'.
Select the asset that you want to change.
Click the 'Change' button.
Select the 'Book values' tab.
Click the 'Depreciation Information' button.
Enter the depreciation rate into the 'Depreciation Rate' field.
Press the 'Ok' button to update the depreciation information.
Select the 'Tax values' tab.
Repeat steps 5 to 7.
Press the 'Ok' button to update the asset information. 
25. My Disposals Report is not balancing with the Summary Report
Make sure that the periods used for the reports are the same. 
26. What value should be entered into Company Tax Rate when starting up a company?
Please check with your Accountant or the South African Revenue Services what the current company tax rate is. 
27. I ran an export – where is my export file?
Faswin creates an export file in the current asset register's directory. Example: If your Faswin data directory is "C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data" and the company from which you are exporting is 'Fastfood', then your export file will be 'C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data\Fastfood\export.txt'. 
28. None of my Reports will print – I keep getting a 'Report Writer' message saying 'No records within specified range'
Your version of Faswin does not cater for lowercase Groups, Departments or Cost Centres.
Select the Downloads page.
The file you will need to download, is dependent on which version of Faswin you are running. Read the specifications accompanying the download files to make sure that you download the correct file. 
29. How can I know if there have been Faswin updates?
Select the Downloads page.
If the version number found on this page is different to the version number on your Faswin 'Help About' screen, then download the relevant file.

30. I ran the update, but Faswin is still the old version
If you are running Faswin from a shortcut that you created, make sure that the target is pointing to the correct directory (i.e. C:\ProgramFiles\Faswin\Faswin.exe).
You should run Faswin from the shortcut under the 'Start', 'Programs', 'Faswin' menu. 
31. My Depreciation Report seems to be missing some amounts
If you do not have version 1.19 or later, then upgrade Faswin.
From the 'Tools' menu, select 'Recalculate Depreciation'. 
32. I sold an asset and now I want to delete it, but it is not in the list of sales
Your data has been corrupted. Write down the asset number for the sale that you want to delete.
Close Faswin, click the Start button, select 'Programs', select 'Faswin', select 'Backup and Restore'.
If prompted 'Do you want to create CFG.TPS?', click the 'Yes' button.
From the 'File' menu, select 'Backup Data'.
Once you have selected the drive and folder containing your backup file, press the 'Start' button.
If you have multiple companies, you have the option to back up registers separately. To do this, click on the company you want to back up and press the 'select' button. By clicking the 'All' button, all companies will be backed up together.
You will then be notified of the number of disks you will need for the backup. Press the 'Continue' button to start the backup or the 'Cancel' button to abort the backup.

From the 'File' menu, select 'Exit' to close the Backup and Restore program.
Send the backup file to info@faswin.com. Do not continue working on your data until your file is returned.
Download the latest version of Faswin from the Faswin web site at www.faswin.com.
Run the update program and wait for your data to be returned. 
33. How do I install Faswin onto a network? – (New Installation)
You must have the Faswin Enterprise Edition in order to run Faswin on a network or have multiple users.
Run the Faswin install program from a workstation.
Click the 'Next' button when you see the 'Welcome !' screen.
Select the 'Enterprise' radio button when prompted for 'Type of Installation?'.
Select the 'No' radio button when prompted 'Do you qualify for an upgrade?'.
Click the 'Next' button.
You will see the Faswin copyright screen - click the 'Next' button to accept the conditions.
You will now be prompted 'Select Destination Directory'. This is the directory on the workstation where you want to install the application files (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin). To change this directory, click the 'Browse' button and select the new directory.
The 'Select Data Directory (Server)' prompt should be pointing to the directory where your Faswin data is kept (this would typically be a shared directory on a server). To change this directory, click the 'Browse' button and select the new directory.
Click the 'Next' button.
You are now ready to install Faswin onto the workstation.
Click the 'Next' button to continue, or the 'Exit Setup' button to cancel the installation.
Once all the necessary files have been installed, you will see the 'Installation Completed!' screen. Click the 'Finish' button to end the installation.
Please note that you only need to register Faswin once. This can be done from any workstation running Faswin.
If after registration you install a new workstation and that workstation prompts you for a registration, then you have not selected the correct Data directory, or the Data directory is for some reason not available to that workstation. 
34. How do I install Faswin onto a network? – (Upgrade from Fasset)
You must have the Faswin Enterprise Edition in order to run Faswin over a network or have multiple users
Make sure that your Fasset data files are copied onto a server, and that the directory and drive to which they are copied are set up with network access rights. You do NOT need to install Faswin onto the server.
Run the Faswin install program from a workstation.
Click the 'Next' button when you see the 'Welcome !' screen.
Click the 'Enterprise' radio button when prompted for 'Type of Installation?'.
If you have been using Fasset and the Fasset version number was less than 2.53, select the 'Yes (Earlier version)' radio button. Please note that you will need to send your Fasset data to conversions@dynamit.co.za to be converted before you will be able to use Faswin.
If you have been using Fasset and the Fasset version number was 2.53, select the 'Yes (Version 2.53) radio button.
Click the 'Next' button.
You will now be prompted to select your Fasset directory (i.e. the directory on the server which contains your old Fasset data – see point 2 above).
If you get a message 'Fasset Directory not found', then you have not pointed to the correct drive and directory. Click the 'OK' button and try again.
Once you have selected the correct Fasset data directory, you will see the Faswin copyright screen. Click the 'Next' button to accept the conditions.
You will now be prompted 'Select Destination Directory'. This is the directory on the workstation where you want to install the application files (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin). To change this directory, click the 'Browse' button and select the new directory.
The 'Select Fasset Directory' prompt should be pointing to the directory selected in point 9 above. To change this directory, click the 'Browse' button and select the new directory.
Click the 'Next' button.
You are now ready to install Faswin onto the workstation.
Click the 'Next' button to continue, or the 'Exit Setup' button to cancel the installation.
Once all the necessary files have been installed, you will see the 'Installation Completed!' screen. Click the 'Finish' button to end the installation.
Please note that you only need to register Faswin once. This can be done from any workstation running Faswin.
If after registration you install a new workstation and that workstation prompts you for a registration, then you have not selected the correct Data directory or the Data directory is for some reason not available to that workstation. 
35. How do I open a new company and copy my existing data into the new company?
Run Faswin.
From the 'File' menu, select 'Create Asset Register'.
When prompted to 'Enter a name for the Register', type in an eight letter asset register name.
Click the 'OK' button.
When prompted to 'Set Default Date', click the 'OK' button.
You will be asked to enter company settings. These settings will be overwritten later, so in the meantime type 'A' for Company Name on the 'Company Information' tab.
Click the 'Company Settings' tab.
Type '1' for the Tax Rate and click the 'OK' button.
Select the 'File' menu, then select 'Exit'.
Run Windows Explorer and select your Faswin Data directory (e.g. C:\Program Files\Faswin\Data).
You will see folders in this directory with the same names as the asset registers in Faswin.
Copy all the files from the folder with the same name as your old asset register (DO NOT copy the folder itself, only its contents!) into the folder with the same name as the new asset register. 
36. We conducted a Year-End, but the Prior Year Depreciation is incorrect – it appears that the total depreciation charged in the previous year has NOT BEEN UPDATED
Restore from backup.
Select the Downloads page.
The file you will need to download, is dependent on which version of Faswin you are running. Read the specifications accompanying the download files to make sure that you download the correct file.
Run the downloaded file on the machine on which Faswin is installed to update your current version of Faswin.
Run Faswin.
Re-run the Year-End procedure. 
37. How can I purchase Faswin if not via the internet?
Specify which Edition you require: Standard (Single user, limited to 1000 Assets and 1000 Cost Centres) or Enterprise (Multi-user, unlimited number of Assets and Cost Centres), Company Name and Delivery Address (this must be a street address if outside of South Africa).
Payment can be made via Bank Transfer or Direct Deposit.
